I think Gatsby was a good man. Just not great.
Yes Gatzby was great, because he loved despite the odds. You can call it an obsession too, but the passage where he states that Daisy is (outwardly)a nice girl shows that he loves her for that.
Anyone else get sorta depressed after reading and watching the Great Gatsby?
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
As an avid fan of this novel, Gatsby was not a great man. His desire, romantic fantasy to wear a golden hat and jump at all costs for his lover was a downfall. The closer he got to Daisy, the more careless he seemed to become. For example, him firing all his previous servants simply because Daisy was visiting more often. That is carelessness to the receiver of the action. Even the witty play on new money vs old money plays to Gatsby's downfall as he seeks to be identified as the latter with his 'golden dull toilet.' Would love to watch another video on this superb American classic.
I disagree. I think TGG is, for a prose work, a work of poetry (and I’m a big fan of poetry).
